As the lush green mountains filling the rear of the landscape suggest, this image was taken where there is rainforest and where there should be lush, mature, growth in great abundance. This bleak, blasted landscape, stripped of trees and brush, makes no sense here. In fact, this is the face of Kauai, still many years after the passing of Hurricane Iniki. It is lucky that the remains of the tree at the print's center, grey, and bleached like weathered bone, stand at all. Each and every other tree in the landscape was sheared off to a mere stump by the winds of the hurricane as evidenced by their skeletal forms which remain.
