Almost an abstraction, this portrait of a nail was come across by serendipity more than by purpose. When one is out in pastureland on the hunt for ancient boundary trees and the majestic oaks of California's pastoral landscape, one can't help but climb a few fences and navigate a rickety gate or two. Every fence has fenceposts of course, and for this one post the arresting beauty of the colorful lichen, red rusty nail, and the rich green pasture behind, all come together to bring into perfect clarity every detail of its subtle beauty.
